KUALA LUMPUR: The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has urged the Education Ministry to draw up guidelines and a monitoring system on the redeployment of teachers. As part of the Dignifying Bahasa Malaysia and Strengthening English Usage policy that was announced late last year, a mass redeployment of teachers nationwide is expected within the next few months to meet the policy's goals. But NUTP claimed that some headmasters were abusing their power and using the policy to get rid of problematic teachers or those whom they did not get along with. Since the announcement earlier this year, NUTP has received 10 complaints. NUTP president Hashim Adnan said it was expecting more to flood in as many more teachers received their transfer notice. "(The mass redeployment) is putting a lot of pressure on the teachers, emotionally and financially," he said yesterday.
In addition to getting rid of teachers whom the headmasters could not get along with, Hashim said there did not seem to be any consideration for one's status and experience.
"We strongly suggest that only single teachers or those with young families should move.
"There was a case of a teacher who has taught English for 10 years but was asked to move elsewhere to teach Bahasa Malaysia (just because she had graduated in teaching Bahasa)."
NUTP also recommended that the ministry give a special monthly allowance to compensate for the cost of moving. NST
